American Heart Month

Raise Awareness this February

It is important for all of us to do our part in raising awareness about heart disease and promoting a healthy and balanced life. Nearly one-third of Americans have high cholesterol, which raises the risk for heart disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), employees with high risk for heart disease and stroke factors, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure, cost employers more in terms of medical care, absenteeism, and lost productivity than employees with one or none of these risk factors.

Here are a few ways to help improve heart health:

  • Focus on your health and wellness, and ask for fellow coworkers, friends, or family to support you in reaching your goals for better health.
  • Keep moving! Take frequent walks (during a work break or before and after work), or join an after-work fitness class.
  • Change your diet, even if it’s one thing at a time. Cut down on your portion size, incorporate more omega-3 fatty acids into your diet, eat more fruits and vegetables, or include more whole grains into your diet.
